Sellout Screen

The Sellout Screen is a recurring joke on PWN, begining with Doctor Strange: PWN #7, where Ari Froehlich jokingly advertises a fictional PWN sponsorship by Audible.com (or "Audiable.com" as the trio pronounces it). A more current version of the joke first appears in A Very Hot Lead: PWN #13, with what Nick and Wesley have branded as the "Wall of Logos". Nick has quipped that his goal with the end of each episode is to "fill the screen with as many logos as possible".

Description[edit | edit source]

List of "Sellout Screens"[edit | edit source]

Doctor Strange: PWN #7

Ari begins the joke by saying "If you don't want to read a book, you could have a book read to you on Audiable.com". Wes follows this, saying "This is not sponsored by 'Audiable.com/PWN'". The Audible logo appears on screen.

Hollywood is Dead: PWN #10

In Part Two of the episode, Ari says "Don't forget to get a free book from 'Audiable.com', every time you use 'Audiable.com/PWN'." He follows this up by acknowledging the absurdity of the joke, by stating "I think the joke has just turned into something completely different... I think it's going to be confusing to people". No graphic appears in this segment.

The Star Wars Holiday Special: PWN #11

During the outro, Ari says "Please go to 'Audiable.com/PWN' to get a free audiobook". No graphic appears in this segment.

A Very Hot Lead: PWN #13

This is the first episode to feature the recognizable "wall of logos" that is prominent in recent PWNs. Wesley begins by saying "Join our MailChimp". Ari follows with the classic "Audiable.com".

  • "Join our MailChimp" - Wesley
  • "Audiable.com!" - Ari
  • "Take our SurveyMonkey" - Wesley
  • "Join our GoToMeeting call" - Wesley
  • "Squarespace" - Ari
  • "Check out our KickStarter..." - Nick
  • "...and our Patreon!" - Nick
  • "Febreze, sponsor us, please." - Wesley

A logo appears for each company mentioned, except for GoToMeeting, which Nick did not realize was a real thing. The Febreze logo takes up the majority of the screen, and serves as a sort of foreshadowing reference to the sketch The Great Kidnap of '43, which had just been filmed (Ari is seen wearing his kidnapper outfit).

Series That Need to Die: PWN #14

During the body of the episode, at minute 11:00, Ari begins to sing "All Star". Unsure how to follow the song, Nick implies that the episode ends there, saying "Subscribe to our YouTube channel, here's our Febreze account...uh". Ari, taking advantage of the joke, points to the "username and password for our Febreze account". This leads to the creation of another recuring joke related to the outro of the episodes, the "Johnny Febreeze Username and Password" (The actual details of the account, "Johnny_Febreeze23, SkyAndLint", were chosen by Ari, who edited the bulk of that episode of PWN).

During the outro, Ari says rather unenthusiastically, "Go to 'Audiable.com/PWN', and..." Nick fills in his blank by saying "Febreze?". The previously mentioned username and password then appear. While Ari speaks, Nick is listing companies: "Orangina, Pepsi...". Wesley says "Don Cheadle taquitos" and "El Monteray". Wes also saracstically says "Please... Why don't instead of adblock, you turn on double ads". No graphics appear for this segment.

Summer of '17: PWN #15

The Sellout Screen for this episode is very brief, combined with the social media accounts. Ari quickly refers to "Here's our username, password, Instagrams, whatever. 'Audiable.com/PWN' there." The Audible logo appears, as does text for the others.

Just the Worst Movies: PWN #16

Wes introduces the segment, saying "Ari, I think you have something to say about our sponsors this week". Ari responds, stating "We are not sponsored by 'Audible.com', we are sponsored by 'Audiable.com/PWN'". Nick continues, saying "Big shout out to Febreze", and Ari points to the username and password. Other companies included are:

  • "Pepsi!" - Wesley
  • "Big shoutout to Harry's" - Ari
  • "Mack Weldon" - Nick

Wesley also says that "We are giving away Ari's cat", and Ari points to the 'Craigslist link', which Nick refused to edit in. All other company graphics are included, as is additional text.

The Last Jedi Review: PWN #17

After Lucan gets up and walks out, the Sellout Screen begins, with Ari offering "Go to Febreze.com: username, password. Go to Audiable.com/PWN". Other companies include:

  • "Go to Mack Weldon" - Nick
  • "Go to... Sausage Shrimp" - Nick
  • "Harry's!" - Ari

On the same screen, Nick and Ari advertise social media pages: Instagram, Twitter, and ShoutWiki. When Lucan returns, Nick asks if he has any sponsors to add. Lucan replies, "Um...No. I'm not a sellout". All graphics are included.

Our Oscar Predictions: PWN #18 - Part Two

As Nick begins the outro, Wesley interupts by saying "YouTube isn't monetizing our videos so we don't have any sponorships this week!" This was in reference to the recent Adpocalypse and the PWN response video, Things are Changing. However, Ari states that "you can still use our Febreze: username and pasword". As he does so, these appear. Other onscreen logos and symbols are:

  • "And you can also like..." - Nick, interupted by Wes
  • "And keep in mind our Audiable, for when it comes back." - Wes
  • "...dislike...subscribe" - Nick, continuing
  • "Favorite!" - Wes
  • "Save... Press the... Watch for later button" - Ari
  • "...and then never watch it again. And then, add one thousand videos to your queue, and then never delete them, cause how are you going to delete a thousand videos? You are never gonna get through those. Then question your own life, and why you even use YouTube...and...HERES OUR FAVORITE COMMENT!"
