Character Biography[edit | edit source]

In A Hot Lead

Not much is known of Tom’s early life. He was born some time before World War I, likely in Greenridge.

He first became a detective working amateur out of a private office in Round Lake, alongside Informant #3. Sometime before 1932 he was recruited for a case by a young Chief James Houston, and eventually joined the Greenridge Detective's Guild. As he later explained to Devin Carter, he began binge drinking in the early thirties, and it was in a drunken stupor that he caused the fire which claimed the life of his partner and several orphans.

In his guilt, he left from the department, finding himself in Daytona Beach, where he failed to earn the love of the Dame From Daytona Beach. Eventually, he ended up back in Greenridge.

In 1942, he was rerecruited by Houston to help with the case of the Fatal Femmes. He was paired with the rookie Devin Carter. Reluctant to work with a partner after his prior tragedies, the two detectives do not get a long. Cluz seeks help from his former co-worker, Informant #3, who has been independently investigating the Fatal Femmes. They trace a vial of lipstick back to an Irish drug dealer called Johnny B. Oy. After a shootout, they take the suspect back to the Guild.

Now easing up to Devin, he tells the young detective about his backstory, but is soon shocked to discover that Johnny B. Oy has been murdered. Devin Carter is killed, and Cluz is taken hostage.

In an attempted rescue by former intern Walter Louis, Cluz is freed and aids Louis in the ensuing shootout. Unfortunately, Cluz is shot down by one of the Femme's goons, and as he takes a final sip from his flask, he dies in Louis' arms.
