Character Biography[edit | edit source]

In A Hot Lead

Devin Carter was born in Daytona Beach, where he lived most of his life. In his early life, Carter says he idolized the Detective’s lifestlye, wishing to save lives and defend the city.

Recruited to the Daytona Detectives’ Trainee Program in 1938, he spent three years as a junior detective before his promotion in 1941. On his first assignment, he was sent to Greenridge to assist in the hunt for the Fatal Femmes.

He is partnered with the grizzled master detective Tom Cluz, who is at first reluctant to work with him. Devin's eagerness annoys Cluz, who verbally berates him despite his willingness to contribute and to solve the case. Carter questions the information provided by Informant #3 (which is later found to be a false lead, though with some connection to the Femmes).

Cluz warms up to Carter, and eventually the two successfully work together to capture the drug dealer, Johnny B. Oy from his home. However, as Carter reviews the case file, he notices inconsistencies in the evidence of the case. He comes to the determination that there may be more to the case than originally expected. As they go to interrogate the drug pimp, it is revealed that the suspect was stabbed to death, and left with the note "KEEP LOOKING". Suddenly, Carter is shot and killed, and Cluz is taken hostage.

Post Mortem

Despite his death early in the film, Devin continues to be an important part of the story of the film. His recorder, which he used habitually to record his inner monologue prior to his death, was put to use by Walter Louis. Devin had been recording at the time of his death, and in subsequent investigations, Louis discovers a female voice captured in the recording, meaning that the killers of Johnny B. Oy (and therefore, the other victims) were definitely female.

Behind the Scenes[edit | edit source]

Devin Carter is the name of another character, also played by Wesley Davies, who would have appeared in the shelved PWN project, “Man in the Mask”.
