Hollywood is Dead: PWN #10 is a sepcial episode of PWN, released in two parts in December of 2016. The videos feature Nick Geoghegan, Wes Davies, and Ari Froehlich. The episode covers Nick's theories pertaining to what he describes as the downfall of Hollywood filmmaking. The two videos are divided into five chapters, each pertaining to a different aspect of the film industry. It was the first PWN to be filmed at Location Four, and is the first PWN to feature something resembling a "story".

The episode is often regarded as one of the best episodes of PWN, and continues to be referenced in other episodes even two years later, for both its running jokes and it's relevant topic. Nick describes the episode as his favorite.

Description[edit | edit source]

Content[edit | edit source]

The episode begins with Wes and Ari alone at the PWN table, Nick nowhere to be seen. Upon calling him, they discover that he is at a funeral for Hollywood, who has just recently passed away. After a title card, the group introduce themselves and the topic in traditional PWN fashion. The episode is divided into five "acts", each discussing a different aspect of the American film industry.

Part One of the episode consists mostly of statistics about films from the summers of the last decade, compared to the summer of 2016. The group discover that the average Rotten Tomatoes score for summer blockbusters has not been as low as it is in 2016 since 2001. However, the average score for the 10 highest grossing films of 2016 is higher than the average of all high grossing films since 2005.

Part Two begins with a clip of an interview with George Lucas, who explains his frustration with the "lack of imagination" and "fear of creativity" in Hollywood, and the abuse of new technologies in film. The episode resumes with a discussion of why Hollywood died. The group mostly discusses the role that money has played in the death of the film industry. Suddenly, roughly half way through the episode, Wes seemingly turns into a tomato, much to the schock and awe of his friends. This scene quickly transitions to Act Four, known as The List. The scene features Nick as a character called "Scientist Man", who reads off a list of upcoming sequels, reboots, remakes, and other terrible ideas planned for release in 2017-2021. The episode concludes with Ari and Nick drawing the conclusion that though 2016 seems like a terrible year for film, this does not necessarily mean that Hollywood has died.

Background[edit | edit source]

Released as a followup to PWN #8's discussion of disappointing movies and PWN #9's discussion of unnecessary sequels, PWN #10 had originally been concieved as a normal length episode for release in early 2015, as The Scourge of Hollywood: PWN #5. However, after Paul Gaurano left the group arround that time, the idea was shelved and saved for a later time.

Inspired by the string of terrible summer movies in 2016, Nick reintroduced the idea to Wes, who agreed that it may work if done correctly. Though the episode was planned to be released on October 25, 2016 (PWN's two year anniversary), filming actually began in early December. The first released PWN that was shot at Location Four, and the second video since Wine Not? the month prior, it was a break from traditional PWN style in terms of the way episodes are structured. It was also the first of two episodes to be released in two parts, with the second being PWN #18.

Production

Inside Jokes[edit | edit source]

The video serves as the source for three of the most prominent recurring jokes and segments on PWN.

  • While not directly responsible for the joke in its current form, this tenth episode was the basis for the Quadruplets Cinematic Universe running gag, which was later elaborated on in A Very Hot Lead: PWN 13. Specifically, PWN #10 features a brief joke about a fictional Adam Sandler film called "Quadruplets!?", for which a poster is seen.
  • The tenth episode of PWN was the first to feature "Garage Nick", or "Scientist Man" as he introduces himself. In this instance, he reads a list of the many, many sequels set for release in the coming years.
  • The episode was the first to prominently feature a tomato. In a famous moment on PWN, Wesley "turns into" a tomato near the start of the second episode.

Furthermore, other minor running jokes are referenced in the video, including referring to Zootopia as "Zootropolis", the usage of the Inception bass sound, and calling Wesley "Wendal".

Films Referenced[edit | edit source]

  2. Jurassic World
  3. Ant-Man
