Spider-Man Far From PWN: PWN #38 is the thirty-eighth episode of PWN, uploaded to PaulWesNick on July 24, 2019. It features Ari Froehlich, Wesley Davies, and Nick Geoghegan, and brief appearances by Joey Cianfrani, Chris Smith, and Kyle Smith. The episode was the second of The Great PWN Road Trip, and the first of two episodes of PWN filmed in National Parks. This particular episode was shot in front of Lassen Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California. The trio discuss "Spider-Man: Far From Home", which the group had watched earlier on the road trip.

The episode, as are the others associated with the road trip, are unique in comparison to the prior episodes. This episode, among other things, was the first to be shot standing up (i.e. none of the trio are sitting down for the entirety of the video), the first to be shot away from Newport Beach, and the second to be shot outside. Nick edited the majority of the episode on the road home, with Wesley adding music and minor gags after the fact at the end of the road trip. This contrasts other episode edited by the pair, where Nick usually trims down an episode largely edited by Wes.

The video features Ari Froehlich, Wesley Davies, and Nick Geoghegan in an extensive discussion of "Spider-Man: Far From Home" which the trio had watched with Joey Cianfrani, Chris Smith, and Kyle Smith in a Carson City, NV theater. From the beginning, it is evident what stance each member of the group takes, with Wesley and Nick attacking the film for its sloppy writing and poor character development, and Ari praising the movie for its humor, characters, and engaging action scenes. The episode is notable for being one of the few where Ari and Wesley discuss the film to a greater extent than Nick does. The film is repeatedly compared to the previous Spider-Man installment, and comparisons are drawn to The Incredibles.

After the end-card, a short clip plays showing the group at the summit of Lassen Peak, which had served as the backdrop for the episode.

Background[edit | edit source]

Filming

The episode was filmed in Lassen Volcanic National Park on July 13, 2019 from about 3:55 to 4:45. The group had arrived in the park soon after 2:00 PM, and had been driving along the park's main road, Lassen Peak Highway of Route 89. Nick had planned to film a PWN at a small clearing past bend in the road, in between Lassen Peak and Reading Peak. The clearing was just above two alpine lakes, Terrace and Shadow. Chris, Kyle, Ari, and Nick got out of the car along a turnout to look for a place open enough to film (this group would later be deemed the PWN Expeditionary Force). After locating a suitable filming spot, they returned to the car and pulled a large folding table down from the roof rack, and slid down the hill to the clearing. A spot was chosen between two large trees, with a view of Lassen Peak visible in the upper left-hand corner.

The video is notable for its impressive visuals, and has been described by Nick as "the only good-looking PWN", not just for the scenic background, but also the sharpness of the image and the clarity of the foreground speakers. Nick and Wes had been worried about the white balance of the scene, but luckily the shadows helped the Sony Handicam (which has been used for every episode of PWN) focus on the three speakers. Occasionally throughout the video, Chris Smith can be seen walking through the snow in the background.

After finishing the discussion, the table was moved and repurposed for a game of die. This game can be seen in the behind the scenes video for the episode, .

Editing

Nick began editing the episode on the morning of July 19, in the backseat of the minivan. During the long drive from San Leandro to Newport, Nick managed to finish the majority of the episode with only 15% of the battery on Wesley's laptop remaining. In the episode, as with PWN #37, a brief shot of Nick editing the video on the laptop in a Subway restaurant in Patterson, CA. The behind the scenes video also features footage of Nick editing on the road, riding the 5 South. Whatever was not finished by Nick was completed on Tuesday, July 23 by Wesley. This included only the soundtrack of the episode, a few clips from the Far From Home trailer, and some visual gags. The episode was uploaded that night, and went public the following morning.
