Bear Grylls Detective is a comedic short uploaded to PaulWesNick on January 17, 2018. The video, written by Ari Froehlich and Nick Geoghegan, features Nick as Bear Grylls, who is forced to solve a mystery after one of his crew members is seemingly murdered. Filming for the video occurred during the summer of 2017, but the release of the video was delayed for a number of reasons. It was the first PWN video of 2018.

The video is often cited by Nick and Wesley as one of the greatest on the channel, with Wes in particular placing the video in his "top five of all time, including PWNs. The video won "Best PWN Short of the Year" at the 2018 PWNER Awards.

Description[edit | edit source]

Cast and Crew

The video stars all three primary members of PWN.

  • Nick Geoghegan as "Detective Bear Grylls", an ex-detective turned Reality TV survivalist who is recording an episode of "Man vs. Wild" when the murder occurs.
  • Wesley Davies as "Johnnythan Prince (the singer)", the suspected murderer.
  • Ari Froehlich as "Jimmothy Michael Jackson", a member of Grylls' crew, who is murdered during filming.

The majority of the video was recorded by Wesley, until his appearance near the end. The cameramen interact with Grylls, and he talks directly to both of them.

Background[edit | edit source]

The idea for the video occurred early on in 2017, as Nick and Ari brainstormed ideas for both the upcoming PSA project in Film Studies, and for PWN videos in general. A number of ideas were created, including a project called "Mob Moms", "Double Sleeper Agent", and a "Jesus Sitcom". These ideas were added to Nick's master list of PWN ideas.

Production[edit | edit source]

Filming for the video took place on July 23, 2017, three days after the filming of Deadly Choices, and five days after Double Sleeper Agent. The trio intended to record an episode of PWN covering the recently concluded Comic-Con, but that slowly fell apart, and Wes suggested that they just begin filming sketches. Three videos were shot, including Bear Grylls, VShower, and "French Gustav Navigator".

The Bear Grylls video was largely improvised, with Nick suggesting a joke and improvising dialogue to go along with it. The two-minute long take where Ari is stabbed was the only shot that was rehearsed before shooting, and was completed in a single attempt. A number of shots took several takes however, in particular the shot where Nick reveals the name of the dead body, and the shot where he suggests that the killing was done with a knife. Ari interupted both of these shots over five times each with near constant laughter. The second of these can be seen in the accompanying blooper video on PWN 2.

The ending was also heavily improvised, with Nick and Wes telling Ari just to "keep filming no matter what". The first attempt involved Nick loudly mounting the outdoor counter and shouting "don't let him see us!", to which Wesley begins questioning Nick. As Nick encroaches on Wes, he throws the dog and makes a run for it, and Nick gets down on the ground to chase the dog, before calling cut. Additionally, two ending jokes were shot, both of which are seen in the blooper video. In all, the video took exactly one hour to film. By the end of shooting, Nick's forearms were heavily scraped and cut from constant prat-falls.

Nick began editing that night, and worked on the video for three days, before getting half way through and deciding that although the idea itself was fun, the video was not good enough to upload.

However, Nick rediscovered the video sometime early on in January of 2018, and found himself laughing a lot at the unfinished video. After another day of editing, cutting down, and adding music, he decided the video was in fact great, and sent it to Wesley, who loved it. They decided to post the video almost immediately, making it the first video of the new year. Ari, who had also forgotten about the video, was pleased with the end result.

Music Used[edit | edit source]

In total, twelve songs were used in the video:

  • Wii Sports Theme - Used for the intro
  • Scheming Weasel faster by Kevin Macleod - Used when Nick explains his stick plan
  • Movement Proposition by Kevin Macleod - Used when Nick grabs the knife/rock
  • Escape from the Temple by Per Kiilsofte - Used when Nick pees in the bottle and Ari is stabbed
  • Exciting Trailer by Kevin Macleod - Used when Nick explains that he was a detctive
  • Hitman by Kevin Macleod - Used when Nick finds the first clue
  • Cluz... Tom Cluz by Wesley Davies - Used when Nick examines the feces
  • Setting Sail by Per Kiilsofte - Used when Nick begins his journey back to the river
  • Johnny's Warehouse 1 by Wesley Davies - Used when Nick approaches the "wild house"
  • Can't Let Go by DJVI - Used after Nick confronts Wes, as the episode ends
