Interstellar: PWN #1 was the very first episode of PWN, uploaded to the PaulWesNick channel on October 25, 2014. Filming for the episode took place on Friday, October 10, from 3:00 to 4:30. The episode, which is 4:36 in length, features Paul Gaurano, Wes Davies, and Nick Geoghegan. The three watch the then recently released Interstellar Official Trailer 3, and do a brief commentary about their opinion of the trailer, and their hopes for the movie. The PWN set many precedents for future episodes, and established multiple inside jokes which are still referred to in videos today.

Description[edit | edit source]

The group watches the Interstellar trailer, discuss their expectations for the film, and talk about other Nolan films.

This video is responsible for creating many of the regular features of PWN videos. These include Wesley's Name Joke, Kevin Macleod's "Unity" for the intro, the closing fistbump, and the standard closing (that's all we have time for, please like comment, favorite, and subscribe, etc.)

Behind the Scenes[edit | edit source]

The idea behind PWN came about late September, when Paul, Wes, and Nick were walking near the school library. Wes had recently suggested that they make a podcast about movies. It was Paul who first realized their initials were P-W-N, and the name stuck. Over the following month, an idea was developed, and the podcast eventually became a table talk-show. Nick was taking drama at the time in the school Tech-Room, which was a large open area at the time, so the desicion was made to film there. The desicion to watch the Interstellar trailer came about fairly late, and was made because it had recently come out and would give them something new to help advertise their video.

Filming took place on October 10 after school in the unused school tech room, later called Location One. Shooting took roughly one and a half hours. Nick edited the video rather quickly, on iMovie. The initial draft was about six minutes in length, though this was shortened to four and a half. The bloopers video uploaded to PWN 2 was edited simultaneously. The video was uploaded to PWN on October 25, 2014 at 8:55 AM.

Inside Jokes[edit | edit source]

Many of the core inside jokes in PWN were created during this episode. Many of them still appear in recent episodes, over three years later.

  • "Let's talk about that." - Paul: Made as a reference to the similar table talk show Good Mythical Morning. Accompanied by a terrible attempt at the show's theme song.
The original "Batman", as seen in PWN #1.
  • "The girl got old!" - Wes: Paul mistakenly assumed that Dr. Brand (Anne Hathaway) was an older version of Murph (Jessica Chastain). He points this out, saying "It's so funny how the girl got old, but the guy...". He was cut off by Wes, saying "The girl got old!"
  • "Batman!" - Paul: Nick mentions that the film is directed by Christopher Nolan. Upon hearing this, Paul stands, leans foward, and says "...who directed Batman!". Despite not garnishing much laughter, this joke has become one of PWN's most infamous, with every major cast member having been recorded saying it at least once.
  • "They got bored so they just drew Minecraft" - Paul: Nick rewinds the trailer to point out the odd cubic robot, CASE. Paul jokes about its rectangular appearance, saying "They got bored so they just drew Minecraft".
  • "5000pHD and 25,000,000 fps" - Wes: Wes, joking about the impressive graphics of the film, says "I'd say it's about 5000pHD and 25 million fps".
  • "Buy our underwear" - Paul: While Nick is creating the end card, Paul is saying random phrases as closing remarks. He says "Stay trendy my friends! Yolo, go to the grocery store and get our underwear."

References[edit | edit source]

The following movies are referenced in PWN #1:

  1. Interstellar
  2. Gravity
  3. Inception
  4. Children of Men
  5. The Dark Knight
  6. Memento
  7. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  8. Pacific Rim

Music Used[edit | edit source]

Only one song was used in the orignal PWN episode, other than the music in the trailer itself.

The song would later be used as the intro music for almost every episode of PWN.

Blooper Video[edit | edit source]

The blooper and extras video for PWN #1, I See Anne Hathaway: PWN 1 Extras, was uploaded on the same day, October 25. As PWN members have stated since Paul's departure from the channel, the blooper videos featuring Paul remain among the funniest, a testament to Paul's exaggerated and comedic personality.

An interesting aspect of the blooper video is the capturing of the birth of the PWN fistbump, which had not been planned before the episode. Paul made his opinion on the fistbump very clear, hence it's disuse until much later episodes.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The transition from the logo to the introduction is a cross dissolve. The subsequent three episodes feature a hard cut from the logo to the intro (while number four features a Ken Burns effect just before the cut). It would not be until the fifth episode, Force Awakens Trailer: PWN 5, that the now standard circle wipe was used.
  • Paul's original hand-drawing of the PWN logo can be seen hanging in the background of the video.
  • As of March 2020, the first episode of PWN remains the episode with the most views.
  • The date of upload for PWN #1, October 25, has now become somewhat of a day of celebration for PWN. Occasionally, an important or special post will be made on this day. On October 25, 2018, the first trailer for Don of the Damned was uploaded to PWN. On that same day in 2019, the first episode of the podcast PostPWN was released.
